Exalto rubber cutlass bearings use nitrile rubber bonded to a rigid shell with deep longitudinal water grooves cut into the bore. The grooves let sand, silt and debris pass through instead of being trapped between the shaft and bearing — making rubber the best choice for vessels operating in turbid water. "As moulded" O/D means the bearing is held slightly oversize by the flexible rubber so it grips the stern tube housing.
